The Menendez Pelayo International Award was created in 1987 under the patronage of Eulalio Ferrer Rodriguez, sponsored by UIMP and with the collaboration of the Cervantina Foundation in Mexico, later subrogated by the College of Mexico (COLMEX). It is an annual prize which aims to recognise outstanding people in the fields of literary or scientific creation, whose written work includes a humanist dimension which evokes the work of Menendez Pelayo in today’s world.
The Award is open to the authors of works in Spanish or Portuguese who have been nominated by universities, academies or other institutions related to literary, humanist or scientific culture.
The winner currently receives the UIMP Medal of Honour and an endowment of thirty thousand euros, provided by E.ON Spain. The awards ceremony takes place during the summer at La Magdelena, Santander. The successful candidate is also invited to speak on a subject related to their academic profile at a conference at the College of Mexico.
